I have been studying music for a long time, but I have only been learning guitar about 10months.. so I can answer your question without doing any harm :) Progression is the changing of Roots, it allows you to change chords while staying in the same key. A common progression is 1,4,5 If I wanted to play a tune in the Key of Cmaj in a 1,4,5 progression I would take the 1st 4th and 5th note of the C scale [C], D, [E], F, [G], A, B, C and Play the chords Cmaj[C-E-G] Emaj[E-G#-B] and Gmaj[G-B-D] this is the basic progression in 12 Bar Blues but breaking it into bars and making a tune is another question all together. Hope that helps.
