Question

Asked by alex on 2000-07-19
what does it mean when a string is in the middle of a chord and it is blank. for example a tab had the 8th fret on the 5th string and the 10th fret on the 3rd string but the 4th string was blank. do i somehow not play that string in the chord? if so what lesson teaches that?

Your right, It means don't play the string. If there where an "x" in the middle, it would mean that you dampen the string. If there are "x's" on the outside, it means don't play these strings. Although, It is quite redundant, it does help beginners.

you would have to either dampen the fourth string or if you are into fingerpicking you could just pluck those two strings
