you've explained everything really well about reading tab but when you say 3rd fret 5th string how do you know where to put your fingers to play the note and so on..... i hope you get what i mean!

Ok, you find the 5th string of the guitar, which is usually the one right below the big, fat one. Now, move your fingers down 3 squares (frets) and use your ring finger, place it on the fret, push down hard on the string and pick the 5th string. Not too hard, huh?
