What exactly is dropped D tuning?

Drop D tuning is when you have a tuning with DADGBE. To get this you down tune your E string a full step to get a root (D) then the fifth (A) then octive (D). This is helpful with rock, so you can pare your rings over the strings, move up and down, and get a cord with out doing much work...
