Usually the first chord names the key of the song.

Well, you will need to investigate key signatures first. When you find what key it is in (if you wrote the song you might be screwed because your songs might not be written in a key and just be all over the place). Then the corrosponding scale in that key will work. For instance if you want to solo in the key of E major. You play in the E major scale. You songs should consist of chords in the E major scale. There is a crash course for your investigation..... If this isnt all getting through to you. Buy a good Guitar- Music Theory book or take some lessons. Its the best way to progress.
